Packing for the Big Adventure!

So here's the challenge: Keeping luggage under 23kilos, when we are travelling for three months, across a variety of weather conditions (from Scandinavia in June to the Greek Islands in August); in a variety of types of travel (from 6 star Cunard - complete with formal dress codes - to staying in pubs). What's the answer - one friend suggested the Helen Mirren approach - just take hand luggage and buy whatever you need from OpShops! Or layers and mix'n'match. Anyone got any other ideas?

  1. Just take personal stuff (unmentionables lol) and basic items and buy the rest at op shops. That way you can donate it back when you're done with it.

  2. Yeah, good idea. We did have a little adventure at Lifeline's Retro shop at Annerley last weekend and picked up a couple of great things - so great that I want to keep them!! I officially love Op-Shops!

  3. Post some clothes over to relatives or friends and send your gowns home after the 6 star cruise!

  4. Layers are good and it is surprising how warm long sleeved mesh shirts are. They are very light weight as well. Pantyhose, tights or longjohns under trousers for extra warmth. Warm hat or beanie and scarf and good socks - light weight wash and dry over night type. A light weight water resisitant jacket over top of everything is good. Welcome to blogging by the way. Love that photo.

  5. We were going to send our clothes overseas - it was FIENDISHLY expensive! I'll just have to commit the sin of wearing some outfits on The Cunard cruise more than once! Thanks to all for your suggestions! Will keep you posted (ha ha)

  6. Renoir, Thanks for letting me follow your adventures. In my limited experience, it is best to get an accurate scale with which to weigh you packed items. Purchase the toughest, lightest weight, and least expensive luggage you can afford. Plan like you are camping.

Identify all the types of activities you'll do. If a garment can't serve two types of activities, buy it when you get there or rent it for the event. Most important are shoe. You can wear back cross trainers with a tux and then wear them hiking on the rocky sea coasts. But don't wear white sox, with your tux, please.

Take the lightest camera gear you'll need. Cameras are easily stollen or lost. Plan on how you will use the images and buy according. Mail post cards home, with specific reminders of your adventures.

Take a digital voice recorder for interviews with new friends and interesting people. Keep an audio journal. Record them in the morning when you are sharpest. Take an ipad instead of a laptop. McDonald's Restaurants now have WIFI in Europe. You can Skype and record you feelings and adventures. Taking an ipod or iPad will let you e-mail photos home or store them on the hard drive. you may need an adapter.

Most of all take a credit card from a company that can give you the best exchange rates. You may be able to watch the long term exchange rates history on line. It will tell you if you should buy in advance or sparingly.

Finally, you may want to check out Rick Steve's European travel tips books. Good luck on your planning. It's half the fun of the trip.
